Full-stack development for the official website of Kimberly Akimbo — the five-time Tony Award-winning Best Musical. Custom WordPress theme with a ticket calendar driving conversions from Broadway through the national tour, cast and creative team profiles, and a content management layer built for the full lifecycle of a hit production.

Development lead at Situation Interactive.

Background

A breakout Broadway musical needed a digital home before opening night.

Kimberly Akimbo — with a Tony Award-winning book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire, a Tony Award-winning score by Jeanine Tesori, and direction by Tony-nominated Jessica Stone — premiered off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company’s Linda Gross Theater in late 2021. The production transferred to Broadway’s Booth Theatre, beginning previews on October 12, 2022 and officially opening on November 10. The show tells the story of a bright, funny New Jersey teenager navigating family dysfunction and a rare genetic aging condition, and it arrived on Broadway with the kind of critical momentum that demanded a digital platform ready to convert attention into ticket sales from the first preview forward.

The site needed to launch ahead of the Broadway transfer — and be architecturally ready to support the production through awards season, a potential long run, and an eventual national tour.

Implementation

Custom WordPress theme with a ticket calendar built to drive conversions across venues and dates.

I led development on a custom WordPress theme designed around a single operational priority: getting audiences from discovery to ticket purchase as fast as possible. The ticket calendar was the centerpiece — an interactive, date-driven interface displaying show availability across the Broadway run and, later, national tour stops spanning 10+ venues. Each calendar entry linked directly to the appropriate ticketing provider for that venue, routing users into the purchase flow with the correct date, time, and theater pre-selected. The cast and creative team section was built as a structured content system with expandable profile cards, individual bios, and social media links — all manageable through the WordPress admin as cast changes occurred across the run. The site carried the full scope of a Broadway production site: hero imagery, video embeds, press acclaim sections, merchandise links, group sales pathways, and a comprehensive accessibility toolbar.

The content architecture was designed to evolve — from the initial Broadway launch through Tony season, the closing announcement, and the transition to a national tour site with its own venue calendar and rotating cast.

Results

Five Tony Awards, 612 performances, and a national tour — all powered by the same platform.

The site launched ahead of Kimberly Akimbo’s Broadway previews in October 2022 and served as the production’s primary digital platform through its entire lifecycle. The show went on to win five Tony Awards in June 2023 — Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Leading Actress (Victoria Clark), and Best Featured Actress (Bonnie Milligan) — with the site handling the surge in traffic and ticket demand that followed the ceremony. The Broadway run continued through April 28, 2024, totaling 32 previews and 612 regular performances at the Booth Theatre. The platform then transitioned seamlessly to support the national tour, with the ticket calendar expanding to accommodate multiple venues, dates, and regional ticketing providers without any structural rebuild.

The platform continues to serve the production as Kimberly Akimbo tours nationally and prepares for its London debut — a single codebase that has supported every phase of a Tony-winning musical’s life.
